We are proud to announce that the Fisher Space pen and Paul C Fisher, the company’s late owner, have been inducted into the prestigious Space Technology Hall of Fame. The pressured writing instrument is in great company next to some amazing technologies developed by NASA, COMSAT and Motorola. The induction was in recognition of the incredible invention of the space pen but also acknowledged its ongoing support to space programs around the world.
Founded in 1988, the Space Foundation’s Space Technology Hall of Fame has inducted individuals, organizations and companies that have created and adapted technologies first devised for use in space to improve the quality of life here on Earth. Honourees are nominated by the space community and global space agency technology transfer offices and then reviewed for induction by a space and technology expert panel.
“The Space Technology Hall of Fame honours not only breakthrough innovations and ingenuity but also the craftsmanship and passion these stellar offerings showcase,” Rich Cooper, Space Foundation’s vice president for strategic communications and outreach, said. “Every day these innovations better lives around the globe and the Fisher family and its notable company are exceptional leaders to recognize and draw inspiration. It is an honour to welcome them into the Space Technology Hall of Fame.”
The grandson of Paul C Fisher, Matt Fisher, was in attendance at the private ceremony to accept this incredible induction. “We are grateful to be inducted into Space Foundation’s Space Technology Hall of Fame,” Matt Fisher said in a statement. “On behalf of my grandfather Paul C. Fisher, my father Cary Fisher, my brother Paul, myself and everyone at Fisher Space Pen Co., we thank Space Foundation for this incredible honour.”
It is an urban myth that the space pen was developed by NASA in the early 1960’s and they invested over $10 million to create it. Inventor Paul C Fisher actually created the pressurised pen using over $1 million of his own money! Nowadays, the pen is still used in all NASA manned space mission but has found 1000’s of new users down here on earth from avid golfers looking for a pen that can write in the rain to diligent architect who needs to write on a variety of surfaces at a variety of angles.
